Strategic Campaign
Hicksville Traffic Safety
2023 New York School Public Relations Association, Award of Honor, Strategic Campaign
Hicksville's Traffic Safety Campaign was launched in response to a parent’s concern after her child was nearly struck by a car in the crosswalk outside Hicksville High School. The incident underscored the need for greater awareness of traffic laws and safe practices during school hours. With input from parents, administrators, and the district security consultant, the campaign was designed to coincide with National Traffic Safety Week in March 2023. Its goal was to educate parents, students, and the community about safe driving behaviors, local traffic laws, and strategies to ease congestion during drop off and pickup. The initiative used multiple channels to reach families, including backpack flyers, website banners, daily social media posts, a student assembly with police resource officers, and student artwork displayed throughout school buildings. This broad approach ensured the message was reinforced across both digital and in person settings. At the following Board of Education meeting, the security consultant reported a decrease in traffic violations near schools, and families expressed appreciation that their concerns had been addressed. The campaign demonstrated the district’s commitment to safety by combining education, engagement, and collaboration to create a safer environment during arrivals and dismissals.
